Reset the workspace before the next appointment
Requirements vary by state and licensing board — this is a general workflow overview, not a substitute for your required bloodborne pathogens training.
-
Dispose of sharps first
Needles and other sharps go straight into an approved sharps container immediately after use, before you touch anything else on the tray.
-
Clear single-use items
Remove and discard disposable barriers, caps, and other single-use items according to your local waste disposal rules.
-
Disinfect non-porous surfaces
Wipe down chairs, trays, and equipment with an EPA-registered disinfectant, keeping the surface visibly wet for the dwell time listed on the product label.
-
Wash hands and change gloves
Wash hands between clients and whenever gloves are removed, and put on a fresh pair before setting up for the next appointment.
-
Restock and re-cover
Apply fresh barrier film, restock consumables, and confirm the sharps container and disinfectant are within reach before the next client sits down.
Common questions
Cleaning and disinfection questions
How long should disinfectant sit before wiping it off?
Follow the product label. Many EPA-registered surface disinfectants need the surface to stay visibly wet for a set number of minutes to actually work — that's the "dwell time," and it's usually printed right on the bottle.
Can gloves be reused between clients?
No. Single-use gloves should be changed between every client and immediately if they tear or become contaminated.
Where do used sharps go?
Straight into an approved sharps container right after use — never back into a drawer, tray, or regular trash.
